What you need to know about the “demon appliance” that can boost your energy bills:

    1. During the winter months, people’s energy bills tend to be more expensive as they use the heating more often. This is why it’s always handy to know how to save money in other ways. According to Martin Lewis, ditching a simple appliance can help, as it can lead to hiking your bills and becoming a bit of a “demon” without people even realising.
    2. Little you may know, people might be unknowingly driving up their energy bills by making simple mistakes with their tumble dryers. According to Martin, tumble dryers can be one of the most costly appliances to run in our homes, so there a few things you need to know if you want to save money and be more financially savvy during the colder months of the year.
    3. Previously talking to BBC News, he advised: “Do you know what the real demon appliance is in most people’s houses? The one that you don’t want to use because it’s really expensive – tumble dryers. I mean, you’re typically paying up to a quid per load, so dry your clothes on an airer outside to shorten the amount of time you’re using your tumble dryer, or avoid using it completely. Those who have dehumidifiers – that can take some of the moisture out. It’s less wattage than the tumble dryer, so it can be more effective.”
    4. Though you may not have noticed, running a tumble dryer regularly can be expensive. This is especially true of older models; however, costs vary greatly depending on dryer type, efficiency and energy prices. It’s reported modern heat pump dryers are usually the cheapest to run, costing around 60p to £1 per load. In comparison, older vented or condenser types can cost up to £1.50+ per load.
    5. To work out how much it costs you, you need to consider factors like your specific electricity tariff (e.g. off-peak rates) and how often you use it. These things can significantly impact the final bill. However, generally, Martin advises you use the appliance as little as you can if you want to cut your bills. According to him, using it less often could help to save a lot of money, so it’s worth giving a try.
