Martin Lewis and the Money Saving Expert team have issued an urgent warning regarding a common energy bill mistake made in December. Many households are failing to submit meter readings before the new price cap takes effect, potentially leading to overcharging. Submitting a reading now ensures your energy supplier bills you accurately for the energy used before prices change.

    1. Martin Lewis has urged every household in the UK to take a manual energy meter reading before the end of December. This simple action is crucial because a new energy price cap is set to be introduced on the 1st of January.
    2. By providing an up-to-date reading, you ensure that your energy supplier does not estimate your usage at the new, potentially higher rate. This prevents the firm from “guessing” that you used more energy in January than you actually did.
    3. The MSE team highlighted that even those with smart meters should consider taking a photograph of their display as a backup. Occasional technical glitches can prevent smart meters from communicating correctly during price transitions, leading to billing errors.
    4. Submitting these readings is especially important during the winter months when energy consumption typically reaches its annual peak. Ensuring every unit of energy is billed at the correct period rate can save households significant amounts of money.
    5. For those who cannot submit on the exact day, most suppliers allow a “grace period” of a few days to backdate the reading. You should check your supplier’s app or website for their specific rules regarding late submissions.
    6. Martin Lewis also reminded residents to check if they are eligible for any winter fuel discounts or cost-of-living payments. Proactive management of utility accounts remains the best way to keep costs down as temperatures continue to drop.
