It was great to see French metal titans GOJIRA get their three seconds of televised coverage at the opening ceremony of this year’s Olympics held in France. Their performance opened just after an image of a bloodied, beheaded Marie Antoinette flashed on our TV screen.
I think it was disappointing that Kelly Clarkson and the what’s-his-face newscaster (forgive me for not knowing the name (Mike Tirico – Editor)) didn’t announce that the band throwing down, amid the elaborate stage production and glorious pyrotechnics was a group of ultra-talented musicians and native sons of France. Of course, Gaga and the other pop notables were acknowledged.
Anywhere else, places like Rock in Rio, UK’s Download Festival, or Wacken Open Air, there would be 300,000 metalheads losing their fucking minds as GOJIRA hit the massive stage.
I have loved this band since 2005, when a publicist for Prosthetic Records turned me on to their Mars To Sirius album. I have been a fan ever since.
What was born underground shall remain underground. Hail Hades!
Felicitations, GOJIRA. Nous t’aimons. \m/
