The key to surviving is having strong and reliable weapons and equipment, but the only way to get your hands on such gear is through crafting them. The essential resources required to craft late-game gear are found from iron crates hidden in caches across the map. For that, you need to know how to get and use a metal detector and find the hidden loot.
There are two ways through which you can acquire Metal Detectors in Stalcraft X. One of them nets you Leglet Metal Detector for free from completing a questline, while the other is from crafting them using in-game resources.
Item |
Craftable |
How To Find |
---|---|---|
SN-1 Pancake |
Yes |
Can be crafted with 36 Stinky Root and 22 Crappite from Trader |
SN-2u Leglet |
No |
Can be acquired as a reward for completing the Junkman questline |
While both the metal detectors serve the same purpose, the Leglet has an inbuilt radar, making it much more useful. Be sure not to take it in PvP-prone areas, as you might lose it by getting killed.
The Metal Detectors in Stalcraft X help you find hidden loot crates containing metal scraps and craft items like aluminum cables from hidden caches which spawn across the map. When you have them in your inventory, the detectors make a sound whenever you’re near a cache, and the frequency of the sound increases the closer you get to the hidden location.
You
don’t need to equip the metal detector
, keeping it in your inventory is enough for it to detect nearby caches. Only equip it if you hear a signal. If you keep it equipped regardless,
it will lose its charge very fast.
What Are Caches
Caches are locations you can find on the ground which contain ‘Iron Crates’ upon digging. These caches can be found using metal detectors and are a great source of scrap loot and essential crafting items like aluminum cables and copper wires. Apart from the cables, the iron crates can contain transistors, capacitors and all the other metal scraps.
Caches mostly spawn two kinds of drop, which either consist of five wires or a pack of 20 wires. Depending on your play style, you should handle them differently.
- Risky Method: You can choose to keep the 20 packs as they are and carry them back to your base where you can put them up for auction and get at least 80,000 Rubles for selling them. While this is lucrative, this option is quite risky as it can be looted if you’re killed in the process.
- Safe Method: The alternative is to unpack the 20 packs immediately to ensure that it is dropped as a ‘Lost Backpack’ if you die, and it cannot be looted. While it somewhat safeguards your loot, the value of the wires will drop substantially, being reduced to around 10,000 Rubles.
How To Recharge Your Metal Detector
Once you get a metal detector, it won’t last you forever. You need to charge it regularly to ensure that it works. Follow these steps to charge your metal detector:
- Go to the Garage.
- Find the ‘Charge Generator’ and press ‘F’.
- Drag the Metal Detector from your inventory into the generator’s inventory.
- Press the ‘Charge’ button on the bottom of the generator’s menu.
- Drag the Metal Detector back to your inventory.
While it might sound easy to do,
charging your metal detectors isn’t free
. Every time you charge your detector, it
costs you a certain amount of Rubles
depending on the amount of charge left on it.
If you’ve got your hands on a metal detector, knowing where to use it is also essential to getting the most value out of that item. Depending on your faction, there are two locations where you can find lots of hidden caches.
- If you’re from the Bandit faction, the best location to use the Metal Detector is in ‘Agroprom‘, which is filled with caches.
- Similarly, if you’re from the Stalker faction, your go-to location for farming caches is ‘The Dark Valley‘.
While both of these locations are sprawling with caches,
they also carry a significant risk of PvP encounters.
Apart from the above locations, you can also find caches across the map in random locations, but the frequency will not be as high as either of them. The advantage of exploring other locations is the decreased chance of PvP encounters, but it requires more time and is less profitable overall.
