The ADAPT Metal Detecting Club, active in South Alicante and Murcia for 15 years, is well known for more than just its hobby. Its 31 members enjoy both sand and sea detecting and run a highly successful “search and recovery” service. Over the years, they have contributed to the local community in a variety of ways. Interesting finds often go to the San Pedro “Museo Barón de Benifayó,” while funds raised through the ADAPT Theatre Group help buy school materials for children from families in need.
Supporting local culture and education
The club’s dedication goes beyond treasure hunting. Many of their fascinating finds are donated to local museums, helping preserve the region’s history for residents and visitors alike. By working closely with the San Pedro Museum, ADAPT ensures that items discovered during their searches can be appreciated by the wider public, providing educational opportunities for schools and cultural groups.
Funds raised from collaboration with the ADAPT Theatre Group also have a meaningful impact. The club’s members are passionate about supporting local education, and proceeds from their events help supply school materials to children from families facing financial hardship. This strong sense of community support demonstrates that the club’s contributions extend far beyond their hobby.
Environmental efforts in the Mar Menor
ADAPT is equally committed to environmental conservation. Lead recovered from the Mar Menor area is handed over to the Spanish “Save the Seahorse” Proyecto Plumbum, which works to clean up local waters while raising funds to further environmental projects. This ongoing collaboration highlights the club’s dedication to protecting marine life and supporting sustainable initiatives in the region. By removing harmful metals and contributing to environmental projects, the club ensures that their activities benefit both people and nature.
Recognized on TV and beyond
The club’s work has been recognised beyond Spain, with features on UK Channel 5 highlighting their achievements. Their combination of hobby, community service, and environmental responsibility has made them a model for similar organizations throughout Europe. Members not only enjoy the thrill of detecting metal treasures but also take pride in contributing positively to society and the environment.
Joining the ADAPT Theatre Group
This year, the club is taking part in the ADAPT Theatre Group’s pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk. How they’ll appear on stage remains a surprise, but both cast and metal detectorists had a fantastic time working together. The collaboration demonstrates the versatility and enthusiasm of the ADAPT members, showing that their talents extend beyond sand and sea.
