    Why food recalls are increasing

E.Coli, metal and even a dead bat have been found in recalled food. In fact, food recalls are increasing. Yet, that might actually be a good sign. Here’s why.

    USA TODAY

    • Over one million bags of shredded cheese have been recalled due to potential metal fragment contamination.
    • The recall affects major store brands including Great Value, Good & Gather, Happy Farms, and Publix.
    • Recalled products were distributed in over 30 states, including Kentucky, and Puerto Rico.
    • The FDA has classified this as a “Class 1” recall, indicating a reasonable probability of serious health consequences.

More than one million bags of cheese sold at popular stores like Walmart, Target and Aldi have been recalled due to potential contamination, according to an updated Food and Drug Administration report.

Ohio-based Great Lakes Cheese Co. initiated the ongoing recall on Oct. 3, stating the affected cheese may be contaminated with metal fragments that could cause injury if consumed. The FDA also reclassified the recall to a “Class 1” on Dec. 1, according to an enforcement report.

The recalled cheese products were different mixes sold in more than 30 states under an array of brand names, including store brands such as Good & Gather, Great Value, Publix, Sprouts and Happy Farms.

It is unclear whether any injuries have occurred in relation to the ongoing recall. USA TODAY contacted Great Lakes Cheese Co. on Wednesday, Dec. 3, but has not received a response.

Here’s what to know about the recall, including whether or not the products were sold in Kentucky.

What to do with recalled cheeses

The FDA generally advises that consumers return recalled food products to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. Consumers can also dispose of the product in the trash, according to the federal agency.

According to the FDA, consumers should not give recalled products to others, especially a food bank or a pet.
