Rabat — The European Commission announced Monday that the signing of an amended agricultural agreement between Morocco and the EU reinforces a longstanding partnership between Rabat and Brussels.
The agricultural accord extends preferential tariff treatment to the Sahara region and has been applied provisionally since October 3. This ensures continuity and legal security for economic operators, the Commission said in a statement.
The European Commission noted that discussions will take place soon within the EU Council and European Parliament on this matter.
The agreement requires that proof of origin and product labeling clearly indicate the production region — specifically Dakhla and Laayoune — and ensures that benefits effectively reach the intended beneficiaries.
The European executive also celebrated the “deep friendship” and “solid, multidimensional cooperation” that Rabat and Brussels have built over the years.
Both parties want to deepen this relationship further in the coming months, particularly through the conclusion of a strategic partnership agreement, the Commission said.
The deal marks a significant development in EU-Morocco trade relations, providing a clear framework for agricultural products from the southern regions while maintaining transparency in origin requirements.
