Energy supplier giving away free electricity for eight hours on Christmas Day

    November 25, 20254 Mins Read

Customers can get several hours of free electricity on December 25

A major energy supplier is providing customers with eight hours of free electricity to enjoy on Christmas Day this year. As the cost-of-living crisis continues to put a strain on UK households, the scheme is likely to be welcomed by many who are watching their pennies.

The offer is part of EDF’s Sunday Saver Challenge, which is now open for December 2025. As a bonus for December, all participants will automatically receive eight hours of complimentary electricity on Christmas Day (December 25) from 8am to 4pm.

On the EDF website, a statement reads: “Earn free electricity on a Sunday. We’re on a mission to help you save cash and carbon while contributing to a more sustainable national electricity grid. That’s why we’ve launched our Sunday Saver challenge.”

How to join the next Sunday Saver challenge

Everyone who signs up for the challenge will receive a target to shift some of their electricity usage away from peak hours (usually between 4pm and 7pm). The more you shift during the week, the more free electricity you can earn. For example, if you shift 50% of your peak usage, you can earn up to 16 free hours to use the following Sunday. To join, visit Energy Hub in your MyAccount monthly and sign up for the challenge. If you miss the sign-up deadline, EDF can send you an alert when the next challenge sign-up period opens. Request a Sunday Saver reminder here. To join, ensure you have a smart meter that sends readings every 30 minutes or set it up to send 30-minute readings.

Explaining why it launched the Sunday Saver challenge, EDF says: “We’re doing everything we can to help our customers save cash and carbon. That’s why we’re offering you free electricity as part of our Sunday Saver challenge.

“We want to encourage you to shift your electricity usage away from peak hours during the week (usually 4pm to 7pm). And by taking some of the strain off the electricity grid at peak times, we’re all helping Britain move towards net zero.”

So far, EDF customers have earned a total of 6,238,028 free electricity hours, worth £1.5 million. You can earn up to 16 hours of free electricity each week, and you can use your free electricity during the time periods below.

Tips to shift your electricity usage

To shift your electricity usage away from peak hours during the week (usually 4pm to 7pm), you could put your dishwasher on later in the evening after 7pm and make sure the programme’s finished before you go to bed. Or put it on at breakfast time to avoid peak time – and make sure it’s full before it goes on.

Unplug your devices and chargers from 4pm to 7pm – use your battery power instead, and remember that they still use electricity on standby. Batch cook at the weekend to save energy and time. Avoid using the washing machine and tumble dryer at peak times.

You can sign up for the Sunday Saver challenge if:

    • You’re an EDF residential customer living in England, Scotland or Wales (aged 18 or over)
    • You have a smart electricity meter that’s sending us readings every 30 minutes
    • We’ve had enough electricity meter readings from your smart meter in the run-up to the challenge
    • We have your mobile phone number, so we can send you messages on how you’re getting on and let you know when the next challenge is
    • You have one electricity supply point (also known as your Meter Point Administration Number or MPAN)
    • Your tariff has one or two electricity rates
