Adani Group—controlled by port-to-power billionaire Gautam Adani—said it will build what it claims to be the world’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 3.5 gigawatt hours in the Khavda region in the western Indian state of Gujarat.

The project, which involves the deployment of 700 battery containers, is already in an advanced stage of implementation and is expected to be completed by March 2026, according to a statement released on Tuesday. The company did not disclose the investment amount for the project.

“Energy storage is the cornerstone of a renewable-powered future,” Adani, chairman of the Adani Group said in the statement. “With this historic project, we are not only setting global benchmarks but also reinforcing our commitment to India’s energy independence and sustainability.”

Once the project is completed, the company plans to build another BESS with an additional capacity of 15 gigawatt hours by March 2027. The group will further expand capacity to 50 gigawatt hours within the next five years. This will support the country’s net-zero targets and global climate goals, which aim to generate 500 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

The BESS project will support the Khavda renewable energy park that is being developed by Adani Green Energy, which covers 538 square kilometers—nearly five times the size of Paris. The plant currently generates 7.1 gigawatts of power from solar and wind and is expected to reach its full capacity of 30 gigawatts by 2029.

With an estimated net worth of $68.4 billion based on Forbes‘ real-time data, Adani is the second-wealthiest person in India. He led the Ahmedabad-based Adani Group, which has interests in airports, cement manufacturing, edible oils, energy, logistics, media, mining, ports, power, and real estate.
