Anthony Mackie Reveals How Twisted Metal’s John Doe is “Wildly Different” from Captain America

    August 15, 20252 Mins Read

On some days, Anthony Mackie will be protecting the planet from supervillains as Sam Wilson/Captain America/leader of the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. On other days, the actor will drive around blowing things up as amnesiac delivery man John Doe in Peacock’s Twisted Metal television series (now in its second season, new episodes of which drop every Thursday right here).

What separates the two characters — beyond the surface-level differences, of course?

Anthony Mackie explains the difference between Captain America & Twisted Metal‘s John Doe

Cap and John couldn’t be further apart as far as characters go,” Mackie explained during a recent conversation with Comic Book Resources. “For John, every day is a new day. The world is in front of him every day he wakes up. He breathes and loves that. Like, that’s his happy place, going out and seeing what the new day is going to bring.”

He went on to describe Cap as a much more “stoic figure” with a heart of gold (Steve Rogers wouldn’t have given him the shield otherwise).

“He’s such an honest, open-hearted human being and soldier, that you know he’s always working from a perspective of acknowledgment, a perspective of paying attention, listening and reacting [to the people around him],” Mackie explained. “They’re wildly different. But we know, one of them has a lot of fun and one of them has to find fun where he can.”

The actor’s comments are similar to the ones he made to SYFY WIRE ahead of Twisted Metal Season 1 (stream all episodes here)

“John Doe is kind of like a man-child. He stopped aging at 16,” Mackie told us. “There’s a certain level of youthfulness, there’s a certain level of unknowingness that he has about him. That’s really beautiful and it was fun to play. He’s a glass-half-full kind of guy. And Sam, he has the weight of the world on his shoulders. He has to kind of find places to have fun because he’s not an all-around, everyday fun guy.”

New episodes of Twisted Metal’s second season drop onto Peacock every Thursday. The complete first season and previously aired Season 2 episodes can be found here!
