    14 Startups Impacting the World Through Renewable Energy

    The global energy landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with renewable energy sources becoming increasingly vital in our fight against climate instability.

    The International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Renewables 2023 report highlights a significant surge in renewable electricity capacity additions, reaching an estimated 507 GW in 2023—an impressive 50% increase from 2022.

    This growth is largely attributed to robust policy support in over 130 countries, signaling a major shift in global energy trends.

    China, in particular, has been a driving force, with its solar PV market expanding by 116% and its wind market by 66%.

    Looking ahead, the report forecasts that solar PV and wind will dominate renewable power capacity additions over the next five years, accounting for a record 96% of new installations.

    This dominance is fueled by their declining generation costs, which are now lower than those of both fossil and non-fossil alternatives in many countries.

    Additionally, supportive policies continue to bolster these sectors, ensuring that renewable energy remains a critical component of the global energy transition.

    Leading the Way in Renewable Energy Expansion

    China’s renewable electricity capacity growth is set to triple over the next five years compared to the previous five, accounting for 56% of global expansion.

    The country’s ambitious Net Zero by 2060 target, supported by the 14th Five-Year Plan and ample availability of locally manufactured equipment and low-cost financing, is driving this rapid growth.

    China is expected to deploy almost four times more renewable capacity than the European Union and five times more than the United States during this period.

    Global Forecast and Regional Highlights

    The report notes that renewable power capacity additions will continue to rise, with significant contributions from regions such as the United States and the European Union, driven by policy incentives like the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and various EU decarbonization and energy security measures.

    India also shows promising growth due to progressive policy improvements, while Latin America benefits from higher retail prices and supportive policies for utility-scale installations in countries like Brazil.

    Overcoming Challenges for Faster Growth

    Despite the positive outlook, the report identifies several challenges that need to be addressed to accelerate renewable energy growth.

    These include policy uncertainties, insufficient investment in grid infrastructure, permitting delays, and financing difficulties in developing countries.

    The IEA emphasizes that addressing these challenges could unlock 21% more renewable capacity by 2028, enabling a smoother and faster transition to a sustainable energy future.
