123 agricultural shows secure department funding for season

    April 1, 20252 Mins Read

The showing season is just over five weeks away, and organisers nationwide are already busy working to ensure their network of 123 events are again successful.

They are doing so in the knowledge that the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht has announced an investment of over €1m to support what is a key component of life in rural Ireland.

The minister for rural and community development and the gaeltacht, Dara Calleary, who announced the investment, said each show will receive a grant of between €4,260 and €11,410.

The funding, which brings the total allocated by the department to agricultural shows since 2018 to over €5.3m, was warmly welcomed by the Irish Shows Association, the national umbrella body for the events — some of which have been a feature of rural life for over two centuries.

Mr Calleary said farming practices have changed, but agriculture is still the backbone of life in rural Ireland and plays a vital role in the national economy.

    Platform for business

The agricultural show has much to offer — not just in terms of the competitive element, but also as a platform for local businesses, farmers and craft and artisan food producers.

It would not be possible without the ‘meitheal’ that is so evident in rural Ireland.

He praised the efforts of show committees, dedicated volunteers and stewards, sponsors, local businesses, and organisations that each do their bit to ensure their local show is a success.

“I would strongly encourage people to attend and support their local show,” the minister said.

I am sure they will find the show has something to offer everyone,” he added.

The 2025 showing season begins in Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co Clare, on May 5, followed by the Kingdom County Fair in Tralee on May 10-11, with shows in Bandon, Co Cork, and Nobber, Co Meath, on May 18.
