One of the biggest announcements of the February 12 Sony State of Play was that a classic Metal Gear Solid game is finally coming to modern platforms, and will be leaving the PlayStation 3 behind.
While the Metal Gear Solid franchise was closely associated with PlayStation systems for a long time, it eventually spread its wings and became multi-platform, especially after series creator Hideo Kojima left Konami. Nowadays, most Metal Gear Solid games have been rereleased or remade for current-generation systems.
There was one mainline Metal Gear Solid title that was trapped on one platform for years, and that exclusivity is coming to an end. Konami revealed during the February 12 Sony State of Play that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is coming to PlayStation 5 as part of the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol.2.
Metal Gear Solid 4 Is Finally Leaving The PS3
First released for the PlayStation 3 in 2008, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots marked the end of Solid Snake’s story, as his aging was artificially accelerated. It was highly regarded at the time, though some fans criticized its lengthy cutscenes and dialogue.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was stuck on the PlayStation 3 for the longest time, but it’s finally leaving. Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol.2 is coming to the PlayStation 5 on August 27, 2026, and it will contain the first port of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

Additionally, Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol.2 will include Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, originally a PSP title that followed Big Boss after the death of the Boss. However, this version of the game is identical to the HD edition that was included in other Metal Gear Solid collections.
It’s exciting to see Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots finally reaching a wider audience, as it gives new players the chance to experience the entire Solid Snake saga, without needing to invest in retro hardware.
