EDF Energy users can earn ‘free electricity’ from January 2026 – exact dates unveiled

    January 5, 20263 Mins Read

In January 2026, there are days when customers can take advantage of ‘free electricity’

EDF Energy customers could benefit from some ‘free electricity’. The provider is set to continue offering its ‘Sunday Saver Challenge’, giving Brits the chance to benefit from ‘free electricity’ on Sundays over January and February.

The initiative rewards eligible customers who shift their daily electricity usage away from weekday peak hours, which span from 4 pm to 7 pm. The more energy customers move to off-peak times, the more free electricity they can earn the following Sunday.

This could range from four to 16 hours free of charge on four specific Sundays starting from January 2026. Rich Hughes, Director of Retail at EDF, said: “January is a time when many people look for new ways to save after the festive period, so we’re delighted to resume our Sunday Saver challenge.

“Over 210,000 customers have been rewarded with free electricity as a result of adjusting their daily usage habits, reducing their carbon footprint and taking steps to contribute to a more sustainable electricity grid.”

EDF’s scheme comes as millions are grappling with increased energy bills this winter. Between October and December, Ofgem’s energy price cap increased by 2%, followed by an additional 0.2% rise from January 1. This means that typical dual-fuel households paying by Direct Debit will shell out around £1,758 per year.

If you are keen to participate in the Sunday Saver Challenge, you will need a functioning smart meter for your electricity supply and must agree to have half-hourly meter readings. Registration opened on Sunday, January 4, and closed at 11:59 pm the same day, before the challenge commenced today (Monday, January 5).

EDF has announced that customers can use their earned free electricity on four Sundays, which include:

    • January 18
    • January 25
    • February 1
    • February 8

Progress within the challenge can be tracked on EDF’s Energy Hub, which is accessible through ‘MyAccount’. Further advice on EDF’s website explains: “You should be able to earn free electricity quite easily by making small changes to your energy habits.

“For instance, everyone in the house can charge up their devices outside of peak times; you can put the dishwasher on in the morning; or do a bit of batch cooking at the weekend.

“Go to Energy Hub in MyAccount to see when you use most electricity. Here, you can also keep track of your carbon savings and free electricity. We know changing habits can be tricky, but we hope you’re up for the challenge!”
