The council have refused plans that would have seen agricultural land at Potash Cottage, in Bucklesham near Ipswich, converted into residential land with a two-storey extension to the existing dwelling.
Plans were submitted to the council for permission for the change of usage, extension and other works to the site but were refused as they would “result in the unjustified loss of agricultural land”.
In a report, a planning officer at East Suffolk Council said the proposal would “materially alter the character and appearance of the existing building and erode the intrinsic rural character of the countryside”.
The report added: “The resulting size of the curtilage would be over large and fail to reflect the scale and location of the dwelling. It would also result in the unjustified loss of agricultural land through its incorporation into residential curtilage.
“The resulting domestication of the land would harm the rural character of the area and constitute an unacceptable domestic encroachment into the open countryside.”
