Mum urged to rethink son’s name as she’s told metal theme is ‘delusional’

A mum has been urged to rethink the name she wants to give her son, as she’s considering naming him after a type of metal, and people have told her she’s ‘delusional’

Choosing a baby name isn’t always easy. The first thing many parents will decide on is whether they want a classic and timeless name, or something a little more unique. Once this has been decided, they can then start thinking of specific names, making sure they sound right with the surname the baby will have.

If you’re unsure about the name you’ve chosen, you might want to get some second opinions from your family and friends – but be warned that they may not have the same tastes as you. One mum has gone one step further, however, and has asked people on Reddit for their opinions on her chosen name for her baby boy.

The mum said she wants to name her son Sterling, but worries she might be being “delusional” because, although the name itself isn’t particularly unusual, when paired with her family’s surname, people have said it sounds “gimmicky”.

She revealed that her last name is Silver – meaning her son would be called Sterling Silver.

She wrote: “I’m due next week, and we are struggling to agree on what to name our baby boy. For reference, our last name is Silver. I honestly like Sterling as a first name, but my boyfriend thinks it will be too gimmicky.

“I think it would be a bad**s name, [but] am I just being delusional with hormones? So it might end up as a middle name.”

The mum went on to say there are other names she and her husband have considered, but she wants to make sure that it “flows” with the name of their daughter, Murphy.

Commenters on the post largely agreed with the woman’s husband, urging her not to use the name Sterling.

One person said: “Sterling Silver is gimmicky, I’m sorry! It would be funny for a fictional noir detective, not so much for a real person.”

Another added: “Naming your child Sterling Silver would be cursing them to a needlessly difficult life due to a joke name.”

A third posted: “Definitely not Sterling Silver. Future Employers might see that as a joke CV. A name shouldn’t be a punchline.”

Several commenters said some of the other names the mum suggested, including Dean, James, and Atticus, are better options. She also said she and her husband both like the name Cillian, but she was urged against that because of her daughter’s name being Murphy.

The two names together would then spell out the name of Irish actor Cillian Murphy, which could be cause for further teasing if the children are a similar age and go to school together.

One person pointed out: “I’d caution against Cillian having another kid called Murphy.”
