He announced his retirement on Instagram on Monday, September 29, at the age of 38.
In his heartfelt statement, Fletcher said: “After a lot of thought, I feel the time is right to retire from football.
“It’s not an easy decision because this game has been my life since I was a boy, but I know in my heart it’s the right moment to close this chapter.”
He added: “Football has given me more than I ever dreamed of, and I step away with a full heart, proud of what I’ve achieved, and excited for whatever comes next.
“Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to everyone who has been part of my journey.”
The announcement prompted a wave of tributes from across the football world.
Wrexham right wing back Ryan Barnett wrote: “I’ll still watch your highlights on the gym TV.
“Absolute pleasure to share a dressing room and the pitch with you Steven, jeezy peeps.”
Former Wrexham midfielder George Evans commented: “Legend!!
“What a player and even better person!
“Congrats on an incredible career mate.”
TV personality Lorraine Kelly chimed in, saying: “Thanks for everything big man!
“You are a class act – hope to see you as a pundit sharing your depth of knowledge and experience.”
Wrexham director Humphrey Ker wrote a separate post with the words: “Happy Retirement to Sir Steven of Fletcher who once told me that for all his incredible footballing success, his career highlight was getting to hang out with me.
“A brilliant player and a brilliant man.”

Wrexham captain James McClean and former player Anthony Forde also posted heartfelt messages, with Forde saying: “What a pleasure it was to make my debut with this legend and lucky to have played with him again many years later.
“Unbelievable player and an even better person.”
