    Morocco’s Plan to Strengthen Food

    September 25, 20252 Mins Read

Rabat– Morocco is set to embark on the development of its “Agricultural Vision 2050,” a strategic roadmap aimed at shaping the country’s agricultural sector over the next three decades.

The initiative will be supported by a major study, scheduled to launch in November, with a budget of nearly MAD 10 million ($1 million), designed to lay the groundwork for the post-2030 strategy following the current Generation Green framework.

The new vision will incorporate major innovations, including the optimization of soils and water resources, the use of non-conventional water sources, the adoption of advanced agricultural technologies, the modernization of distribution networks, and enhancements in food safety, sector organization, and access to financing.

Its overarching goal is to ensure Morocco’s food security, strengthen agricultural sustainability, and enhance national sovereignty in the face of climate change and demographic pressures.

As part of the preparation process, the upcoming study will include a mid-term evaluation of the Generation Green strategy, aiming to define an operational plan to accelerate ongoing initiatives up to 2030. The findings will then serve as a foundation for developing the 2050 agricultural roadmap.

The research will assess the potential of available soils and water resources, analyzing how these could support agricultural development across different regions, production basins, and hydraulic basins. Data will be drawn from planning documents, including Morocco’s National Water Plan, integrated water resource management plans, IPCC reports, and other relevant sources.

In addition, the study will examine the impact of climate change on hydroclimatic conditions, water needs, and agricultural production for the years 2035, 2040, and 2050. It will map current and future soil potential, assess the evolving uses of arable land, and provide detailed evaluations of irrigable areas and their potential development.

Water resources, both surface and groundwater, will be analyzed for their availability and suitability for irrigation over the coming decades, with special attention to non-conventional water sources that could be mobilized under feasible conditions.

The Agricultural Vision 2050 represents Morocco’s ambitious step toward a resilient, sustainable, and technologically advanced agricultural sector, ensuring the country remains prepared to meet the challenges of the future.
