Popular metal frontman dead at 52 after battling rare cancer: ‘You will eternally be missed’

    September 17, 20253 Mins Read

Popular metal frontman Tomas Lindberg has died after a battle with cancer.

    He was 52.

His band, At The Gates, shared the news on Facebook on Tuesday.

“Tomas passed away this morning following complications related to his ongoing cancer treatment,” a statement posted there read. “Despite intensive medical efforts, his life could not be saved.

“Tomas — You were an inspiration to us all,” the statement continued. “A true friend, both compassionate & sympathetic. You will always be remembered for your generosity and your creative spirit. You will eternally be missed.

    “Forever in our hearts.”

His death came just more than a month after the band shared an update about just how grueling his fight had been.

“In early May, Tomas experienced a health setback,” the band shared in a statement on Facebook. “Since then, he has been hospitalized and has been receiving dedicated care in a specialized ward where he is being closely monitored around the clock.

“While this is a challenging time, we’re staying positive but, even in a best-case-scenario we know the recovery will take a long time,” the statement continued. “We kindly ask that you respect Tomas’ and his family’s privacy during this period.”

The band shared statement that Linberg wrote prior to the setback in his fight in May. In that statement, he revealed to fans that he was diagnosed with “Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (a cancer in the mouth and pallet)” in December of 2023. Lindberg said he had “been through a lot.”

“First there was a major surgery, where they took away a big part of the roof of the mouth,” he wrote. “This was followed by radiation therapy for two months, and ever since it has been a long hard path towards recovery. Now, in the beginning of 2025, they have found some remains of the cancer, and it is inaccessible by surgery or radiation. So, we will see what the next step is, but probably some form of chemotherapy to keep the cancer in check.”

Linberg said in his statement that he recorded vocals for a new album before his surgery, and that he and the band are proud of the album. He also said he did not want to do interviews about the cancer, treatment or recovery.

“Take care of yourself, your loved ones and the time you have on this earth,” he wrote.
