The ‘Bitcoin Family’ who sold everything for cryptocurrency: they’re now hiding their money in metal cards on four continents

    August 28, 20253 Mins Read

In 2017, Didi Taihuttu shocked the world by making one of the riskiest decisions of his life: selling absolutely everything he owned to invest in Bitcoin. His house in Venlo, the Netherlands, his business, his car and even his daughters’ toys became part of a total bet on the cryptocurrency. What many considered madness turned into a life project that propelled him and his family to fame as the “Bitcoin Family.”

At the time, Taihuttu was 39 and no stranger to the crypto world. He had started mining Bitcoin in 2010 and sold his first BTC in 2013 – a decision he would later regret as the price skyrocketed. It was after a family trip that brought him closer to minimalism that he decided to go all in on a digital future.

In 2017, when Bitcoin hovered around $900, he sold his house for 85 BTC – roughly $300,000 back then. Today, with the cryptocurrency trading above $100,000, that sum has multiplied into millions.

    On the road

Alongside his wife Romaine and their three daughters, he left behind stability in the Netherlands and moved first into a campsite. Since then, the family has traveled through more than 40 countries, living off their crypto assets and promoting a lifestyle based on decentralization. For Taihuttu, Bitcoin represents freedom – a system outside the reach of banks and governments.

With a fortune in cryptocurrencies, security became a priority. Taihuttu doesn’t trust banks or centralized platforms. His strategy is to store his wealth in cold wallets – offline storage devices – hidden across four continents. This way he ensures access to his funds while traveling, but keeps his savings safe from hacks or confiscations.

    More than money

Today, the “Bitcoin Family” doesn’t need to work in the traditional sense. Still, Taihuttu insists that his choice is about more than the millions gained: it is about living with fewer attachments and proving that an alternative economy is possible.

What began as a leap into the void seven years ago has turned into a borderless experiment in living – a family that travels light, but with a digital fortune stashed away on metal cards scattered across the world.
