In case you’d forgotten, we’ve got a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 releasing on Xbox next week!
Yes, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will be with us on August 28th, and the first reviews for the game have begun dropping across the web today, so we thought we’d round them up and see what the initial verdict is.
And based on what we’re seeing so far, it’s off to a great start! It currently has an average of 86 on Metacritic for the PS5 version based on 58 reviews, while the PC version is also 86 based on 16 reviews. There unfortunately aren’t enough impressions of the Xbox version to generate a score yet, so it seems the Xbox version has been hard to come by for most outlets (we haven’t heard anything about it here at Pure Xbox yet).
So, here are some of the reviews we’ve come across so far:
“A legend is brought back to life with Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, in a surprisingly sensitive remake from Konami featuring developers from the original.”
“One of the most faithful remakes ever, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater has made a stealth classic feel modern all over again. Its light but meaningful gameplay updates enhance interaction and feel, while a visual overhaul allows it to rub shoulders with the PS5’s graphical elite. By staying so loyal to its source text, Metal Gear Solid 3 is now just as incredible today as it was over 20 years ago.”
“It successfully modernizes visuals, tweaks game design, and updates controls so that the game sits comfortably alongside its action game contemporaries. From a content perspective, Konami has played it incredibly safe, using the same voice work and music, and leaving the story completely unaltered–effectively making Delta a one-to-one remake.”
IGN (8/10)
“Part of me is still curious about why this was made if it wasn’t going to come with more substantial changes outside of the big visual upgrade. However, if I were to point someone to one of the many versions available, this is the one I’d recommend, whether they’re revisiting or playing for the first time. Kojima and the original team may not have been involved in this remake, but the spirit of Snake Eater persists.”
“I can’t say Delta is inherently a bad game, because at the end of the day, it’s still Metal Gear Solid 3 — it’s still a phenomenal game. But as a remake, Delta makes some head-scratching choices and doesn’t really provide any incentive for me to play this version over the handful of others that are out there.”
The vast majority of critics seem very positive about this one, so that bodes well for the release next week!
If you’re thinking of picking it up, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is available to pre-order on the Xbox Store right now for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and you’re looking at paying £69.99 / $69.99 for the standard version.
We’ll hopefully be back soon with some footage of both the Series X and Series S versions of the game so you can see what the visuals and performance are like, so stay tuned for more details in the near future.
