Worcester metal gig for musician who died of cancer

    August 16, 20252 Mins Read

Angel of Rage has been organised by Xen Angeli from Droitwich Spa in tribute to his brother Anj, who died just eight weeks after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the age of 42.

Anj was a well-known figure in Worcestershire’s metal scene from the early 1990s, performing as a lead vocalist and guitarist in bands including X 10 8, who released the album Something Lost… in 1994.

His music career was tragically cut short by the disease.

The fundraiser will be held on Saturday, September 6 at The Marrs Bar in Worcester, with half of all proceeds being donated to Pancreatic Cancer UK.

The line-up includes Blaze Bayley, former lead singer of Iron Maiden and Wolfsbane, and local metal bands Unto the Ages and Last Agony.

In 2018, Anj began experiencing stomach cramps and severe back pain.

He was later diagnosed with acute pancreatitis but continued to suffer from intermittent pain in the following years.

Despite multiple GP visits, no further investigations were carried out.

He was eventually referred to a specialist, but the appointment was cancelled.

On January 24, 2021, Anj developed jaundice and was taken to hospital by his brother.

A CT scan revealed he had pancreatic cancer that had spread to his liver.

It was too advanced for treatment, and he died just eight weeks later.

Mr Angeli said: “We encouraged Anj to keep persisting with his GP.

“He was autistic and occasionally struggled with the process, from getting an appointment to being in the surgery.

“It felt like he was overwhelmed, which only worsened when the lockdowns happened.

“I now wish they’d investigated further when he was first admitted to hospital but, as Anj was young, pancreatic cancer didn’t cross anyone’s minds.”

Pancreatic Cancer UK said the disease is the UK’s deadliest common cancer, with more than half of patients dying within three months of diagnosis.

The first Angel of Rage event, held at a local pub, raised £1,400. for the charity. With the larger venue, Mr Angeli hopes to raise £2,000.

Tickets at £16.91 are available from the Universe website.
