Durham agricultural college helps young people get into farming

    August 6, 20251 Min Read

Supporting young people into farming is crucial to help sustain the industry and the country, according to the North East’s largest land-based college.

Houghall Campus is part of East Durham College and offers agricultural education to 750 students.

“If I wasn’t farming I don’t know what else I would do, being out every day looking after things, it gives you a purpose,” said student Katie Wall.

According to data from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), 40% of agricultural workers are over 65, and there is a clear demand for young workers.
