Energy bills have been rising in recent years and the trend is expected to continue. However, homeowners could save £100 on their annual bill with this easy fix

Households could see their energy bills cut by over £100 annually with a ‘simple fix’, as major suppliers like British Gas, EDF, EON, Ovo and Octopus grapple with the surge in energy costs.

Gordon Wallis from Your NRG, a heating oil provider, said: “Energy prices may be rising again, but households still have tools to take back control.” He suggested that a minor adjustment such as “Lowering the thermostat from 20°C to 19°C is barely noticeable day-to-day, but it could shave over £100 off your energy bill. It’s a free change that doesn’t impact quality of life but really adds up over time.”

Mr Wallis also pointed out that: “Simple fixes like these can stop your hard-earned money from literally slipping through the cracks.” In other news, Nationwide will pay £760 into accounts of customers who do one thing.

Lowering the thermostat by just one degree can save up to 10 per cent on energy bills

He further highlighted the benefits of smart meters, saying: “Smart meters help reduce billing errors and encourage smarter usage,” and added, “When you can see how much energy you’re using and what it’s costing you naturally become more conscious of waste.

“Older boilers can be as little as 60 per cent efficient, meaning 40 per cent of your energy is wasted,” and claimed: “Replacing it with a modern A-rated model could save up to £540 annually and reduce long-term strain on the system.

“There’s no need to wait for winter,” and assured, “These actions can benefit you all year round and protect you from future price hikes.”

Ben Gallizzi, an energy expert at Uswitch.com, also weighed in, advising: “Deciding where to place your thermostat is important because it can affect how well your heating works.”

He added: “Placing it in a room that is colder than the rest of the house, such as a hallway, is a bad idea as it will turn on and off at the wrong times. For example, if you open the front door and let in cold air, then the thermostat may tell your heating system to send out more heat as it thinks the whole house is below your desired temperature.”

In simpler words, in order for households to save over £100 on their energy bills, they should lower the thermostat by just one degree. Doing this simple change will save up to 10% on heating costs.

Alternatively, things such as smart meters or reducing water usage by taking shorter showers can significantly reduce costs. Every little helps, right?
