Bangkok Post – Bangkok to Host Global Digital Currency Conference

Event brings central banks, tech firms to discuss CBDCs

    PUBLISHED : 14 May 2025 at 14:28

The Digital Currency Conference 2025 will take place from 28–29 May at The Athenee Hotel Bangkok, following the Currency Conference. Organised by Currency Research, the event will convene over 400 participants from more than 60 central banks, government agencies, and private firms to explore the evolving digital currency landscape.

This year’s agenda will focus on topics including central bank digital currency (CBDC) implementation, stablecoin governance, public-private collaboration, risk management, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing. With stablecoins like USDT playing an increasing role in cross-border transactions, practical use cases—such as day-to-day finance via USDT wallets—are also expected to be discussed.

Attendees can look forward to presentations, panel discussions, workshops, exclusive roundtables, and networking events, as well as special activities including a gala dinner, an awards ceremony, and a tour of the Bank of Thailand’s banknote production exhibition.

Concurrently, Thailand is stepping up efforts to curb digital asset-related crime. The government has approved emergency decrees targeting unlicensed foreign crypto platforms, with penalties of up to three years in prison, 300,000 baht fines, or both. The Thai SEC has also gained expanded authority to block suspicious crypto transactions and compel providers to report scam-related activity.

The new regulations extend accountability across multiple sectors, requiring banks, telecom firms, and social media platforms to support anti-fraud measures. However, Thailand remains open to innovation, continuing to explore blockchain tools for securities trading and the potential issuance of a government-backed stablecoin tied to short-term bonds.

Building on the momentum of past events, the September 2024 edition in London centred on the theme “Views on Use”, focusing on real-world applications and user experience. Sessions addressed regulation, public-private convergence, and tokenisation trends, followed by the Central Bank AI Conference, which explored the role of AI in digital currencies.

In 2023, the conference in Mexico City emphasised the technology and design of digital currencies, bringing together global policymakers and tech leaders.

This year’s Bangkok edition will also feature firms like CIPHER-CORE, Inc., showcasing its complete cipher technology designed for CBDCs.

As digital currencies reshape global finance, the 2025 conference presents a timely forum for collaboration and thought leadership in the field.
