Haiti - Agriculture : Signing of an agreement with Taiwan to improve rice production in the country

On Monday, August 26, 2024, at the premises of the National Coordination for Food Security (CNSA), Vernet Joseph, the Minister of Agriculture and Wen-Jiann KU, the Ambassador of Taiwan (Republic of China) signed a partnership agreement as part of the project to improve rice production in Haiti.

This project targets the three major rice production areas of the country, namely : the Maribaroux plain (Northeast), the Northern Plain, the Saint Raphael Valley, the Cayes and Torbeck plains (South).

This agreement will help consolidate the achievements of the project to Strengthen National Rice Seed Production (REPONSE), while waiting for a new project to be designed.

According to Minister Vernet Joseph, this project is part of the efforts that the Government intends to deploy, with a view to addressing the problem of food insecurity with pragmatism and determination. The Minister welcomes this new agreement. He sees it as an opportunity to continue supporting Haitian rice farmers, emphasizing “This will be an intervention to consolidate the efforts already deployed since 2019 in these regions.”

Ambassador Wen-Jiann KU, echoed the same sentiment, stating “With these implementation agreements, Taiwan is continuing its support for national rice production, especially during these difficult times when widespread insecurity affects agricultural production.”

The idea is to contribute to the food security of the Haitian population. Because, the diplomat believes at the end of his mission https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-43049-icihaiti-taiwan-end-of-mission-of-ambassador-wen-jiann-ku.html “food self-sufficiency is the foundation of a state’s sovereign development.”

With this agreement, Taiwan continues its support for national rice production and strengthens its support by expanding its area of intervention to market gardening and fruit production.

According to our information, the Taiwan technical mission in Haiti has partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture to launch the material assistance program for loans. This initiative provides quality rice seeds, affordable fertilizers and agricultural machinery services to help farmers plant on time, thus ensuring food security and economic stability for families.
