TROY, Ala. (WSFA) – Randall Barr, who spent more than three decades with the Troy Police Department, the last decade as its chief, announced Thursday his plans to retire. Barr issued a statement on social media that thanked the mayor, city council, his family, the police department, and Troy residents.
“After much discussion, thought and prayer with my family and friends I have made the decision to announce my Retirement from the Troy Police Department,” the chief wrote.
Barr started his career in law enforcement in April 1989 with what was then Troy State University. He transitioned to the city’s police force in 1991.
Barr called his nearly 36 years in law enforcement an honor and said “there has never been a day when I did not want to put on my uniform and go to work.”
Named as the police chief in 2015, Barr looked back on his time leading the department as “the highlight of my career,” and that he’s “been given opportunities that I have never dreamed for myself.”
Barr also acknowledged experiencing “much sadness during this same period,” which saw the loss of fellow officers, deaths of small children, and murders.
“I hope in some way I was able to give the families of these tragedies some comfort in knowing that our Police Department would be there for them in their time of need,” he wrote.
Barr has not said what his next step in retirement will be. Mayor Jason Reeves has not yet publicly comments on the chief’s retirement announcement or announced who will lead the department until a permanent chief is named.
Barr said his retirement is effective as of September 20.
