Press Metal Partners with Xi’an Jiaotong University for carbon capture research

    July 20, 20242 Mins Read

Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Bhd, a Malaysia-based world-class aluminium producer, has signed a collaboration agreement with China’s Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) to advance carbon capture and utilisation research. This new agreement builds on a memorandum of understanding established in August 2023.

The joint venture aims to create a commercially viable carbon capture and utilisation model tailored to Press Metal’s manufacturing processes. Under the terms of the agreement, both Press Metal and XJTU will jointly own the intellectual property resulting from this research.

Xi’an Jiaotong University has a strong track record in the field, having conducted 13 research projects on carbon dioxide capture and secured ten related patents. The project began in September 2023 and is scheduled for completion by August 31, 2026.

The initiative is supported by a grant of RMB 12 million (approximately RM7.7 million) from Press Metal. This funding will cover system design, research expenses, professional training, and knowledge transfer milestones.

In its latest annual report, Press Metal reaffirmed its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The company’s emissions totalled 11.8 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2023, with a significant portion falling under the Scope 1 and Scope 2 categories. However, the company has made strides in reducing emissions intensity, with figures dropping from 4.1 to 3.3 tonnes CO2e per tonne of aluminium from 2022 to 2023, demonstrating our dedication to sustainability.

As of the end of 2023, Press Metal’s current smelting capacity stands at 1.08 million tonnes per annum, while its extrusion capacity is 230,000 tonnes per annum.
